SGN closes the Burnell Road junction from Monday 14 September and now reopens it on the 20th. Its own page said 18 October all through August.

The High Street and Burnell Road close at their junction from Monday 14 September. Both reopen on Sunday 20 September.

That is one week. For most of the summer the same closure was published as five.

SGN’s project page for the works gave 14 September to 18 October every time we checked it between 17 August and 7 September. The page now reads 14 September to 20 September (SGN: Sutton, Burnell Road). SGN has not posted an update note explaining the change.

The legal paperwork agrees with the shorter version. London’s roadworks register carries one SGN permit for the High Street, and it runs 6 to 19 September. There is no second High Street permit reaching into October (LondonWorks register).

What is actually closed

Both roads are shut where they meet. SGN’s own wording is that it will be “working at the junction of Burnell Road and High Street with both roads shut here”.

The company says the following applies to every closure in the scheme:

  • signed diversions will be in place for drivers
  • residents keep vehicle access from one end of each closure
  • parking bays will be suspended at times, with signs put up in advance
  • all businesses inside the closure areas stay open, with access maintained
  • refuse collections continue, worked out with the council

Still nothing on the buses

SGN’s page says only that bus routes “may be impacted” and that residents should contact their operator. That has not changed since July.

We checked Transport for London’s bus disruption feed on 12 September. It listed 37 items across the network and none of them mentioned Sutton, Burnell Road or the High Street.

So two days before a town-centre closure, there is no published diversion for anyone travelling by bus.

The rest of the programme moved too

The junction closure is one phase of a bigger job. SGN is decommissioning about 1.5 kilometres of iron gas main between Erskine Road and Collingwood Road, part of a £30 million, five-year programme to replace 15 kilometres of old large metal mains across south London. The register’s permits say the old main is “continually leaking and placing nearby properties and businesses at risk”.

Three other dates changed alongside the High Street:

Street Published in August Published now
Oakhill Road, temporary lights to 20 September to 11 October
Brunswick Road, closed to 4 October to 11 October
Collingwood Road, verge work to 1 November to 11 October

Orchard Way stays closed to 1 November. Vale Road closes from 28 September and Bushey Lane from 12 October, both to 1 November.

Comparison chart of SGN's published Sutton dates: the Burnell Road and High Street junction cut from 14 September to 18 October down to 14 to 20 September, with Oakhill Road and Brunswick Road extended to 11 October and Collingwood Road brought forward to 11 October

Where the page and the permit disagree

Two of SGN’s current dates have nothing behind them on the register.

  • Oakhill Road. SGN says temporary lights to 11 October. The register carries no live SGN permit for Oakhill Road at all.
  • Brunswick Road. SGN says closed to 11 October. The SGN permit for Brunswick Road ran 23 August to 12 September and expires today.

The register’s Vale Road and Bushey Lane permits both run 13 September to 10 October, which is earlier at both ends than SGN’s plan.

None of that makes either source wrong. A permit is the legal authority to dig, and it can be varied or reissued; the project page is the operator’s intention. It does mean the dates on the wall will keep moving, and that the register is the one to trust for what is authorised today.

What it means for you

If you drive through the north end of the town centre, expect the junction to be gone for the working week beginning Monday and to be back the following weekend. If you had written off the High Street until late October on the strength of the earlier dates, you can stop.

Three other jobs are on the same stretch. TfL has temporary signals at the High Street and Vale Road junction from 9 to 30 September. SES Water is fitting a new bulk water connection to 1 October. The council is repairing kerbs and drainage from 20 to 24 September.

If you are on a bus, check with your operator on the day, because nothing has been published.

Our Sutton roadworks and travel page tracks every live closure in the borough, including overnight resurfacing on Sutton Common Road on 14 and 15 September and on Boundary Road and Park Lane from 16 to 18 September. The trains to London guide has the alternative, and parking in Sutton covers the town-centre car parks.

Frequently asked questions

When is Sutton High Street closed?

The High Street and Burnell Road are shut at their junction from Monday 14 September to Sunday 20 September 2026, for SGN’s gas main replacement. SGN’s project page previously gave 18 October as the reopening date. The register’s permit for the High Street runs 6 to 19 September.

Can I still get to the shops?

SGN says all businesses inside the closure areas stay open and access to them is maintained, that signed diversions will be in place, and that residents keep vehicle access from one end of each closure. Parking bays will be suspended at times, with signs put up in advance.

Are buses being diverted?

Nothing has been published. SGN’s page says only that routes “may be impacted” and points people to their operator. TfL’s bus disruption feed carried no Sutton entry on 12 September.

What else is closed nearby?

Orchard Way is closed to 1 November and Brunswick Road to 11 October, with temporary lights on Oakhill Road. Vale Road closes from 28 September and Bushey Lane from 12 October, both to 1 November. Our roadworks and travel page tracks the whole borough.
